Norval Morrisseau
Norval Morrisseau was born on March 14, 1931, in Fort William, Ontario, or, he was born on March 14, 1932, at Sand Point near Beardmore. it had been recorded that he was the oldest of five boys. His mother was Grace Theresa Potan Nenakwigagos, and his father, Abel Morrisseau. Norval almost died when he was little but his mother took him to a medicen woman and she gave him a powerful Ojibway name Copper Thunderbird that gave him strength. Many elders were surprised and outraged that a young man was given such a powerful name.

Novals grandfather raised and introduced him to Ojibwa shamanism. His grandfather told him all about the legends and myths that have been past down through generations of ojibwa people.Norval started to draw pictures of the stories and legends. He usually drew on the sandy beach of Lake Nippagon with a stick and let the waves take it away.

Norval Morrisseau is a very important and a exeptional artist in Canadain history. He gained only a 4th-grade education at the Indian boarding school in Ft. He was the first canadian native to paint ancient myths and legends of the Eastern Woodlands story's that have been past through generations. He styled his paintings by adding striking colours to his paintings.
Eventually he took his paintings south of Toronto where they met the rave reviews. Now he hangs his paintings in the most important and popular museums in Canada and around the world. He received a honorary degree from the Royal Academy of Arts. He is a member of the order in Canada (the highest civilian honer in in canada) In 1989 he was the only Canadian painter to be invited to participate in the "Magicians Of The Earth" exhibition at the Museum of modern art in Paris, France. He had many solo shows in Canada and the US.

His work remind our memories of childlike simplicity. His colors effect us in ways that are not immediately apparent. His visions like ancient taboos that have turned into dreams of the future.

Norval Morrisseau is founder of a Canadian-originated school of art called Woodland or sometimes Legend or Medicine painting. He has had a lot of exhibits in Canada and Europe (especially France), but is not well known (except to northern Indians) in the U.S.

Sadly Norval died december 4 2007 (75 years). The star did an artical for norvals death and made a small video->
